Farming, wildlife and community in harmony

What we do
Gare Hill Meadows is a collaborative farming project, bringing together specialists in environmental management, grassland ecology, rare-breed livestock and bee-keeping, with the community in which it is set.

How we do it

Organic

Nature-friendly

Free Range

Grass Fed
Food production at Gare Hill Meadows is defined by the ecosystem. We started by assessing the site: evaluating its ecological features and rarities; considering how these could be enhanced; identifying what notable species or communities that could be here are currently absent and collating all of this to produce a plan by which the farm's wildlife value could be maximised as food is produced. The Farm is now under a Higher Tier Countryside Stewardship agreement.
Then we turned to our neighbours in the village. What do they need in their landscape? How should the farm operate to maintain and improve their quality of life? Are we farming considerately day-by-day? We are members of the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Network.
Only then did we think about producing food; designing a production system that enhances local wildlife and improves the lives of people in and around the village.
Now we are working to do this with the minimum of carbon emission: generating power from solar energy; storing more carbon in grassland, hedgerows and field trees and minimising pollution at every stage of our farming.
We think you'll like the results .....
